CMHC MLI Select energy efficiency criteria have changed

CMHC has updated the MLI Select energy efficiency requirements to align with the 2020 National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) and the 2020 National Building Code (NBC). The changes took effect on November 28, 2025.

New criteria based on the 2020 NECB and NBC

Transition period ended

September 30, 2026

Projects could qualify under the previous criteria until this date

What changed

The updated criteria raise the energy performance thresholds at every level, so projects targeting 20, 35 or 50 points now need to show significantly better energy performance than under the earlier requirements.

CMHC allowed a transition period so projects already in progress could continue under the previous criteria until September 30, 2026. That period has now ended, so new submissions need to meet the updated thresholds.

What it affects

  • Energy modelling pathways
  • Tier selection and points strategy
  • Mechanical and envelope design choices
  • Financial planning for MLI Select submissions
